Royal Society of Chemistry – Schools’ Analyst Competition 2021
Niamh Ferrigan and Kate Lindeque from Kingsbridge Community College are the South West regional winners of this year’s Royal Society of Chemistry Schools’ Analyst competition, winning £50 Amazon vouchers for themselves and £500 for the College. This annual competition is open to all Year 12 A Level Chemistry students, and as hundreds of students in the South West participate every year, this is an outstanding achievement!
Teams were required to undertake a variety of practical analytical determinations on a number of environmental samples and industrial waste. Some of the tasks were relatively familiar to the students, such as titrations, but others, such as chromatographic separations, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, were not. Students were judged on their practical skills and their ability to identify the samples, as well as teamwork and safety in the laboratory. Niamh and Kate correctly identified all of their samples, and by correctly answering all of the 22 follow up questions, they were able to demonstrate exceptional knowledge and understanding of analytical chemistry.
Niamh and Kate, this is a brilliant achievement and accolade. Well done, and enjoy spending your vouchers!
PS thank you for winning £500 for us to spend on chemistry equipment as well!
