RNAS Culdrose Year 10 Engineers
South Devon UTC students were given the fantastic opportunity of attending a tour of the facilities at RNAS Culdrose, Helston, Cornwall. Along with demonstrations from the team down in Helston on how to load up torpedoes, the students were also asked to try on various items of biohazard clothing, see how the Navy helicopters are operated, learn how an engine works and watch a gear box being hoisted down in to the body of the Merlin helicopter.
In addition to this, several of the students had the chance, which they embraced, of sitting in and operating a helicopter simulator (none landed the helicopter safely!). The Year 10s were also shown the multitude of different drones that the Navy use as reconnaissance tools and how they could potentially be armed.
