Exeter Chiefs Project Rugby
Since September we have been fortunate enough to have Olly Hale from Exeter Chiefs in school every week working with our students.
This opportunity has come about following a successful application to ‘project rugby’ which is an initiative that is branched out across England to try & provide accessible opportunities for people to participate in the game & stimulate life long interest.
Our students have had the best experience. Across Olly’s time with us he has worked with 8 different classes of students, 2 different intervention groups & a whole host of students who already love the game & have attended rugby club after school with Olly to be inspired.
Students have experienced first hand coaching which has not only been technically some of the best coaching they could ever experience but also coaching that has been extremely nurturing & encouraging. The additional benefit has been in house up to date CPD for PE staff who have been able to work alongside Olly & learn at the same time as doubling the support available for our students. As a result of the in class support received, multiple students have now gone on to not only start joining in at a school club level but have taken this further by investigating Newton Abbott Rugby Club (NARFC). We are fortunate enough to have NARFC club coaches delivering at our after school club alongside Olly & PE staff to not only develop the experience that can be offered to our students but to also provide a familiar face to ease the transition beyond school rugby into club.
In a quote from Olly about his time at Teign he said “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students at Teign school. They have been absolute superstars, putting themselves out of their comfort zones, and learning new skills which they have all improved massively on. It’s been great to see the development of these young people, the growth I have seen in the last 12 weeks has been extraordinary. Students that might not have gotten involved with much sport before have really come out of their shell and become more confident, more able, sports people. I hope that in the future I can return to Teign and work with these fabulous students again”.
Our intervention project groups have been wonderful to watch. Some of our students who lack confidence & self belief have really started to flourish & we hope if nothing else will take some great experiences away with them.
Building on from project rugby, Olly & his team at Exeter Chiefs alongside Ben, our coach from NARFC, are going to be hosting a festival at Teign for 40 of our students. Other schools will be invited to work initially in a development morning, honing the skills they have already developed, then playing in games to test the progress of our students against other local competitors.
In addition to this we have been invited to a ‘project rugby’ celebration day at Topsham Rugby Club where we will be taking students who are new to rugby & have showed great potential in lessons. They will work alongside multiple community coaches to take their skill set to the next level.
We could not be more thankful for the rugby opportunities we have had so far this year & look forward to building on these in the coming months.
Watch this space for a match day experience at the Chiefs ground in Exeter for our most committed players who attend club each week.
