ESW News 2 July 2021
This week’s cartoon is sponsored by Jeremy Miles, Education Minister for Wales. I do try to avoid making political statements… Jeremy Miles suggested that the reason why so many children were being sent home to isolate was because headteachers decided so, of their own accord. Nothing to do with being compelled to follow guidance. The laziness and crassness in the suggestion that heads think that sending home thousands of children a week across the UK on a whim is (almost) beyond belief. I really don’t have anything printable to say other than share with you my huge frustration at such a comment. If he knew the amount of work that goes into following the guidance around this area…and if he doesn’t then why not?
In a week when the SoS has also decided to talk about the blanket banning of mobile ‘phones in schools, rather than actually allowing heads to run their own schools based on context, you do begin to wonder if people actually know what goes on in schools. But we know;
- we know that we all continue to work with colleagues in all areas to ensure that children and their families are supported in their education
- we know that schools in ESW work to ensure that entitlement to a balanced and enriched education is something all children can access
- we know that all staff work to support one another through what has been an incredibly difficult year, covering for absent staff, taking on additional roles and going way beyond the extra mile to ensure that our schools can function
- we also know that, wherever we can, we support colleagues in other schools for the sake of all children.
I also know, and want to share, that staff from all schools and shared service areas are picking up any additional loads without any complaining, because they respect their colleagues and want to do everything they can for the children in our schools. If you haven’t watched any of the cycling you must at least have heard about the exploits of Mark Cavendish; the way in which his team have supported him when everyone around him had written him off I have found both inspiring and heartening. I hope that whatever your role, you feel that the team around you is giving you the same support.
Have a great weekend, when it comes.
Best wishes, Matthew
