Coombeshead Academy Girls Rugby Development Day
Coombeshead took girls rugby by storm as they took part in a girls rugby development day. The day was run by coaches from Newton Abbot Rugby club along with some of the players from the women’s rugby team. 30 students from year 7 & 8 took part in the morning and set the tone of the day. They were so enthusiastic and energetic that the coaches said they were some of the best they had coached. The coaches set up drills to develop their passing, kicking, movement and the girls favourite tackling, finishing with a small game at the end putting their skills into practice. In the afternoon the year 9 & 10 took to the Astro. To start some were dubious but after the drills from the coaches they were showing signs of becoming decent rugby players. The girls showed great skill in all areas but in particular the tackling where they got to tackle pads but also moved on to tackling each other which they took in their stride. At the end of their session they went into a game which they picked up extremely quickly and it became very competitive.
A huge thank you to Simon and his team for spending the day coaching the girls and building their confidence and love of rugby. Already a few girls have been down and trained with the club and we hope a few more will to.
A big well done to all the girls involved you were a credit to the school and showed that girls are fantastic at rugby!!
