Beyond the Baseline!
Teign School was lucky enough to be selected by the Youth Sport Trust to be involved in one of their initiatives, Beyond the Baseline! A group of students were selected to support them in having a positive experience in school and to support them in reflecting on the aspirations they have for themselves. Our 8-week journey required us to demonstrate patience, kindness and teamwork. All vital life skills. Apart of this project is to be paired up with an athlete mentor. We had the wonderfully inspiring Louise Hunt, tennis player and Paralympian. Our students took to Louise straight away and she took them, and a brilliant team was created. The challenge was for the group of students, with little to none sport leadership experience, to deliver tennis sessions to a local primary school. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, but on reflection this group of students were so impressive and do such a fantastic job. They showed commitment to attend every week, when others didn’t. They embraced the tasks; they LOVED getting their t-shirts and always asked for when Louise would be back! We exceeded all expectations! We led to Tennis sessions to two different primary schools, we made a link with Kingsteignton Tennis Club, who kindly allowed us to host a tennis session at their courts for Rydon. A huge thank you to Rachael the lead tennis coach at Kingsteignton for working with us and supporting the tennis session. Our students were amazing! They led the whole session, they introduced themselves to over 60 students and supported them with kindness and a smile. We succeeded in task of organising and delivering practical sessions. The bigger picture is the positive impact we hope for our students involved, to believe in what they are truly capable of! I (Mr Mercy) personally want to thank the students involved for their efforts and the experience they gave to me; I would work with and choose those students again. So here is to more positive experiences.
